Three Blogs for 3 Amazing Days - Day 1

This weekend was a long weekend, and we took the time to head to the mountain home, and to various towns in Austria over the three days. As I have too many photos for it to allow me to post it all in the one blog, it will be in 3 separate parts (one for each day)!

DAY 22 : 6 December 2014
Sabato (Saturday) :
This was definitely a Saturday like no other! It began with the usual 4 hours of school on Saturday, but when we got out at 12, Francesca and Dario were waiting for us to take us to the mountains! The drive here (after nibbling on croissants and mini pizzas) was the most amazing, magical, scenic drive I have ever been on! The trip on the 'autostrade' (not sure if there's a speed limit on, but Dario was going close to 150km/hr), was so incredibly scenic, surrounded by the Italian alps with more, and some of the highest, mountains I have ever seen! As we got further out of Udine, more and more snow began to appear on the mountain tops, that could only just be seen beyond the layer of clouds. Upon our arrival in Pontebba, we quickly went into their 'apartment' (which was actually more like a townhouse - with 5 storeys all to themselves), dropped off our bags and then got back in the car to drive another half an hour to AUSTRIA! I can most certainly say that is was strange to be able to travel to another country in just half an hour, and have all the street signs and languages change from italian to German within a span of about 1km! We drove just to the small town of Villach, where we wandered around stalls, past an outdoor ice skating rink and multiple Christmas trees, and into the 'best bakery in town', as I was told by my lovely host family. It most definitely lived up to this title, when I tried the traditional cake of Villach, which they aptly named 'Villach'. It was multiple layers of chocolate cake, vanilla cake, chocolate cream, vanilla cream and some sort of red fondant!
My photos from Villach...
By 3:30 we were back on the road to Pontebba, and by the time we returned home at 4pm it was almost completely dark.
We had a lovely Austrian dinner of potatoes, various types of sausages and gherkins, followed by an amazing apple pastry tart for dessert!
We also put up the Christmas tree, which was decorated much the same like ours in Australia, but with lots and lots of angel decorations!

Day 1 of my weekend in Pontebba successfully completed - my time here is flying! 3 weeks ago today since I arrived with this wonderful family in Italy!

Love,
Jen
